A key symptom of dementia is memory loss. As this disease worsens, all the bits and pieces of information that form our memories become, in one way or another, lost.
But what if memory data could be recorded externally? And used to re-create memories within a virtual world?
So that in future years, those with the disease could re-live and experience their now long-lost and forgotten memories. This is the premise of Dr Spencer and her research.
Ellie follows the memory breadcrumbs trail back to Tokyo, as she fights with her desperate daughter, finally leading her to the truth and self-realisation.
"How do I deal with dementia? Don't know, I don't have dementia. But if I did, I'd say put it to the back of your head and deny all knowledge. You've gotta have a positive attitude, it's all in the mind. Don't let anyone point in your face, saying you've got this or that just because you're getting old. She's already started, took away my car, talks down to me, and a bunch of other stuff that I can't remember right now."
"How do I deal with dementia? Alcohol. Serious. I even drink at work now. It just gets a bit too much at times. I'm talking about the whole package: Mum, Dementia, the way she's getting worse, the way there's no real hope of getting better and the way she keeps denying it. I don't want to put her in a home. I cherish the times when she's lucid and living in the moment, but those moments are too far in between."
"How do I deal with dementia? I don't know anymore, sounds a bit dramatic but ... brains are far more messy and complicated than you could ever imagine. Add glitchy software, take away my research team, my budget and the unfortunate cruel reality that some minds are just too far gone to be helped. But sometimes it works. Mind and machine line up, everything clicks ... that's when it's worth it."
